Description

A luminous white marble statue of Adonis dominates the foreground of this captivating painting, the statue's attention and desire longingly focused on the construction worker - Watson's third depiction of handsome Melbourne model Harry Hall.

Dramatic snow capped mountains feature in a beautiful landscape, providing the model's spectacular backdrop to this dream-like scene. For those familiar with the artist's ouvre, once again he leaves it to our imagination as to how the construction worker has found himself in this pristine location, and whether he is dressing or undressing.

The exquisitely spare use of complementary opposite colours - magenta, fluorescent yellow and tangerine, are in contrast to grey hues and white, which is cleverly employed providing a tonal bridge across the elements of the painting, uniting the mountains, hard hat and figure of Adonis. It is this sparseness of the composition, while lacking vast negative spaces, that provides a rest-full and pleasant flow for the viewers eye as it moves through the depth of the field of the painting.
