Ross Watson's artistic development is plain to see in this breath taking painting which features Nathan Collett, and explores themes relating to nudity and social media.
What does the bubble represent? In the context of the series title Censored Nudes the bubble may be a filter that social media companies impose on the depictions of our lives. Repressing what is not considered socially acceptable, these so called 'community standards' must conform to the parameters that large faceless companies impose on us, in order to engage with their apps. With an increasing prudishness to such standards, are we becoming a society that doesn't know how to discriminate art versus pornography.
Are our attitudes toward nudity and the human body being influenced by what we can view through Instagram or Facebook? With an increasing amount of people using these apps for their primary news and information source are we headed down a path where the human form in its purest state is unacceptable? What do social media companies have to fear by allowing the whole body to be viewed. And more importantly, why are these standards haphazardly applied?
