This painting depicts Melbourne based model Darcy in an authentic Australian Army World War II trousers, hat and soldiers belt known as a Sam Browne. He holds a pair of officers boots. Ambiguous to the viewer is whether the model has stripped to swim or dressing after cooling off in his tropical location.
The Hon. Michael Kirby has held many discussions with Ross about the lack of depiction of male nudes in contemporary art. Watson is rare amongst artists, with few painting full frontal male nudes, and with the fineness and sophistication demonstrated in this striking painting.
