Description

This charming new painting offers a close up and intimate scene of a young soldier reading at a pristine sunny coastline.  Captain Reading is the first depiction of the Melbourne model, Jack Fordham, a friend of Watson’s.

From the artist’s Silence series, the painting is imbued with the same qualities of the popular series - stillness, peaceful relaxation, and isolation.  A low viewing point offers the viewer the feeling of relaxing on the grass close to him in this simple and balanced composition.

Blue mountains rise from bright unspoiled beaches, which taper into the distance and the scene's central point, reinforcing the focused ultra-real detail of the soldier and foreground.
