Description

Backpacker, Mykonos was inspired by one of Watson’s earliest visits to the Greek Island over thirty years ago. This year the artist re-discovered drawings and photographs from his travels at that time, which have been employed in the creation of this intimate and meditative painting.

Watson met the model Anthony at the beach in Mykonos, and they spent several days together enjoying the popular Greek Island. The attractive young backpacker became the inspiration for several artworks produced in 1992, including Anthony, Mykonos.

A bell tower offers handsome though simple architectural details, and provides the setting for the sleeping backpacker, dramatically spotlit by the afternoon’s golden sun.

A carefully cropped scene features one diagonal wall line, which importantly, takes the viewer’s eye down to the central subject, or conversely up to the pristine blue Mediterranean sky in this superb painting.
