Description

Demonstrating a masterful composition, this striking new painting features a naked young surfer, Melbourne model Harry Hall, before a charming Venetian backdrop, which Watson observed on his last visit to the magical city of water and light.

Looking up into a moody sky the surfer pauses balancing his surfboard, whilst a gondolier appears above the dividing wall - both men captivated by something unknown to the viewer.    Employing a spare colour palette of principally vermillion, white and black, the composition benefits from the playful visual relationships between the surf board, the jetty poles, and the striped shirt and striped wall serve to reinforce the strength of this intriguing scene.
