Description
In this elegant painting Watson has explored the themes of the beginning of new life. He has referenced Raphael's Madonna and child which he has enjoyed visiting regularly at the National Gallery in London. Depicted with his new born daughter Zoe, Brendan Bourassa is contemplatively engaged with his new role as father and guardian. The striking colour balance of the painting is set off by the vivid orange hues of the fabric overlying the models lap in contrast to the rich red and green dress of the Madonna. The overall effect is a calm balance of tranquility in this exemplary example of Watson's paintings.
