I have often been drawn to painting models who seem to effortlessly relate to their classical counterparts, belonging convincingly in landscapes and settings from centuries past. I’m excited by bringing opposites together – a carefree student I saw skating along the street, and the stiff formality of an 18th Century figure. In some of these paintings, I was drawn to exploring the themes of isolation, emotion and desire.
I personally think leaving something to our imagination is more interesting. Ambiguity and mystery is often an ingredient in my art. Vermeer’s enigmatic paintings have provided me with great inspiration.
