In Caravaggio’s time, artists could not simply paint whatever they wanted. I’m reminded here of my freedom as an artist. Imagine what Caravaggio might paint if he were alive today? The painting marks an important shift in my art, as St Peter is replaced with the contemporary figure, Francois Sagat, who is unmistakably part of the scene, physically nailed to the cross. Continuing to celebrate positive gay role models is important to me. Unfortunately, there are still too many who can benefit from them.
