Visitors to my exhibitions often ask me, ‘What is this painting about?’ My reply is, ‘It’s whatever you decide it’s about.’ I really do find it intriguing to hear everyone’s interpretations, which are always so varied.
When I saw the stacks of crumpled cars I thought they were a perfect metaphor for aging. They remind us that everything has a limited lifespan.
The art critic, Elwyn Lynn, referred to this period of my art as ‘undistressing surrealism’, which I think is apt.
