Description

Evoking a fragment of a dream, or perhaps a peek behind the scenes on a movie set - this painting is an outstanding example of Watson's distinctive surrealist compositions.

Gently resting his head on his surfboard, Collett, one of Watson's most popular models is the central subject, watched over by a Canadian Mounty resting in the foreground. The watcher and the watched, in a scene which is simultaneously external and bright, and with a strength of intimacy despite such a public location.

Contrasting opposites have long been a feature of the artist's paintings. Here he presents us with an informal naked figure, alongside a formal uniformed one against a backdrop of an aircraft wrapped in its entirety.

Contrasting colours have been employed to great effect also, with the complimentary opposite colours of pistachio green surfboard and vermilion red of the Mounty's jacket creating a vibrancy, enhancing the tension in the painting.
