Description

The final painting completed for inclusion in the artist’s Melbourne exhibition this month, features an astonishing scene - dreamlike, erotically charged, and exploring Watson’s signature theme of complimentary opposites in an invented setting.

Appearing to have been interrupted, Melbourne model Alex turns and engages the viewer, naked, confident, and seemingly well aware of the potency of his animal magnetism.  Adjacent and in contrast to Alex is the formality and intensity of the handsome, uniformed King’s Trooper, who stands still with his eyes keenly focused in the distance.  The hallmark of Watson's skill is evident in the exquisitely rendered detail of the soldiers uniform.

Diagonal lines, rich colour and shadow and light enliven the background in a forcefully simple and direct composition, which includes a military regimental insignia.

Instantly recognisable as a companion work to the similarly titled and internationally popular artwork Alexis and the King’s Trooper, which features on the cover of Watson’s new book Untitled II.  The two paintings explore similar themes while employing different models, and are precisely the same size.

This outstanding and collectable painting may be pre-purchased and will be available for release at the conclusion of our Melbourne Exhibition and Book Launch.  21 November to 1 December, 2019.
