Introduced Species
"The elemental dichotomy of classic and present themes is anchored in Ross Watson's art. He succeeds in mapping a landscape between man and nature that is as humbly thought provoking as the subjects in his works."
James J. O'Donnell, Art Collector, New York
Issues relating to the environment and indigenous Australians motivated me to paint this series. The title refers to various species, including flora and mankind, and was inspired by traveling in North Western Australia.
I chose the hooded figures to represent those other than Australian aboriginals - the oldest race on earth. The shadows of leaves on their hoods are caused by an introduced tree which is threatening the survival of native flora.
